Akin to most garage rock bands the people producing their own news (citizen journalist) all want to be heard. They want to be heard listen to and maintain a degree influence. But like most aspiring garage rock bands they eventually find that it’s pretty competitive.
Sure some may get picked up, they may be very talented writers or they may just be in the right place at the write time.(very punny) But for most their voice will fall on deaf ears (eyes) And eventually the few blog groupies that they acquired will become disinterested. Even Nanna and Mum will begin to tire. The novelty will where off and the aspiring Pillenger will move on to origami or join Oxfam either of the two, in some cases both, depending on the individual.
Water always seeks its own level, meaning that although there maybe a current surge of user generated content they still need to maintain an audience. No-one wants to sift through pages of LCD powered news content. Why would they when they can go directly to an online news site that has done all the cultivation for them?
I feel that enough time has passed that people are no-longer dupped by the ” free-slash-bargain” offer. There is always a catch. Pop-ups offering free ipod nano’s for doing surveys or free IQ tests that require your mobile phone number most people over the age of 9 who have used a computer before know this is some sort of scam.
For me and most i have spoken to, the POP up and the free offer or gift, represent little more than a waste of time and bandwidth.
I appreciate the ideas of making money off web content, but it is also important to be aware that there is alot more competetion on the web and you have alot less time to hold your audience.
If you have a web-site that basis itself on providing news then all power to you. But it’s un realistic to expect to make money from advertising. Simply because there are better more reliable websites that provide better news. Unless your news is specified and caters to a specific identified market. Does that means news is becoming gentrified? News, only be targeting those with enough money to support the advertising that supports the content.
I feel this reading is a bit optimistic. It did point out methods used to create money. But it does explore difficulties faced in establishing a strong reader base. A reader base that trust your content and your endorsements.
